In a ‘small’ but large city like Helsinki, you can explore all the highlights in just 1-2 days. For a detailed itinerary, check out my post “Discovering Helsinki: A Fun Guide for Everyone!” where I share tips on making the most of a short visit. The best things to do in Helsinki depend on your budget and how much time you have, so I’ve put together this list based on my experience as a Mexican living in Finland. It combines must-see attractions with my own unique perspective, giving you a bit of background on each place and how to enjoy Helsinki in a way that’s both authentic and personal.
1. Visit Oodi – Helsinki Central Library
As one of the most visited places in Helsinki, it’s a must-see for book lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike. Oodi is more than just a library; it’s a hub of knowledge, creativity, and community. With its modern design, expansive book collection, and various interactive spaces, Oodi offers a unique experience. Check out my post “A Local’s Guide to Oodi – Helsinki’s Central Library” to better understand the Finnish library system and make the most of your visit. While you’re exploring Helsinki’s literary scene, don’t miss the Finnish National Library with its beautiful design, and the modern Helsinki University Library, both of which are also worth visiting.
2. The Rock Church (Temppeliaukio Church)
Another must-visit in Helsinki is the Rock Church, one of the city’s architectural gems. Carved directly into solid rock, this church is breathtaking, especially on a sunny day when light floods the copper ceiling. It’s my personal favorite church in Finland. This church has unique acustics that’s why you will find that visiting it during a concert is the best idea! There are few concerts you might want to take a look for an unforgettable experience.
3. Enjoy Cafe Regatta and Sibelius Monument
When in Helsinki, a visit to Café Regatta is essential. Known for its charming red cottage, seaside location, and cozy fires during autumn and winter, it’s also one of the most Instagrammable spots in the city. After your coffee, take a short walk to the Sibelius Monument only 300m away, an impressive piece of art dedicated to Finland’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius. For a unique perspective, view the monument from below to see the striking arrangement of silver tubes.
4. Take a Day Trip to Tallinn, Estonia
To expand your adventure, consider a day trip to Tallinn, just a short ferry ride from Helsinki. Explore the medieval charm of Tallinn’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its cobblestone streets, historic churches, and vibrant cafes. It’s a perfect way to experience a different culture and add another country to your travels in just one day.
To be honest, I’d put this as my number one recommendation, but I will keep number 3, not to rest interest in Helsinki!
5. Visit the Natural History Museum of Helsinki
Discover the wonders of nature at the Natural History Museum. This museum offers exhibits that range from ancient dinosaurs to Finnish wildlife, making it a fascinating and educational destination for visitors of all ages.
6. Discover Helsinki’s Market Square (Kauppatori)
Immerse yourself in local life at Market Square, where you can taste traditional Finnish delicacies, shop for handmade souvenirs, and soak in the vibrant waterfront atmosphere. It’s a lively spot that captures the essence of Helsinki.
7. Explore the Finnish Wilderness: Visit Nuuksio National Park
No visit to Helsinki (and Finland in general) is complete without exploring the nearby wilderness. Head to Nuuksio National Park, just a short drive or bus ride from the city, to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Finnish nature. This stunning park offers a variety of hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to more challenging treks, all surrounded by dense forests, peaceful lakes, and rugged cliffs. You can also enjoy activities like berry picking in the summer or snowshoeing in the winter. If you have more time, consider exploring other nearby nature spots, such as Sipoonkorpi National Park or the tranquil Paloheinä Forest, both offering a true escape into the Finnish wilderness.
8. Explore Suomenlinna Sea Fortress
Step back in time at the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through its historic tunnels, visit the museums, and enjoy a picnic with stunning sea views. It’s a fantastic destination for both history buffs and nature lovers. I don’t recommend visiting it during winter. Spring migh be good idea if you want to have a look of the frozen sea. Summer I’d only go if the weather is really warm and I’d make sure it’s not windy. Suomenlinna is for many a good place to go and do a picnic in my opinion you can find better parks elsewhere.
9. Relax at the Allas Sea Pool
After a day of sightseeing, unwind at Allas Sea Pool, an urban retreat with heated pools, a sea swim, and a traditional Finnish sauna. Located by the harbor, it’s the perfect spot to relax while enjoying beautiful views of Helsinki.
10. Ride the SkyWheel Helsinki
For breathtaking 360-degree views of Helsinki, take a ride on the SkyWheel. This giant Ferris wheel offers a unique perspective of the city’s skyline and surrounding archipelago, making it a perfect spot for photography and sightseeing.
