Helsinki is a green and modern city where the nordic design meets the nature timeless elegance. Surrounded by stunning architecture, charming lakeside cafes, lively market squares, world-class libraries, easy access to national parks (forest) and much more. This blog post includes tips for activities during summer and winter time!
Helsinki Basics
- When visiting Helsinki, there are a few things you must take into consideration. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, has a population of around 650,000 people- not so crowded as other cities in Europe. During summer specially on sunny days the city becomes ‘alive’ while when the temperature start to drop, people also prefer to stay warm at home.
- Finns love nature and silence, and public libraries are some of the most valuable assets in this country.
- You’ll also notice the simplicity of Finnish design, often incorporating wood elements that reflect the natural surroundings in many of the city’s buildings.
- The easiest way to move around Helsinki is by using public transportation. Consider buying day tickets (24 hours valid) or tickets for multiple days, depending on your stay, for unlimited travel on trams, boat (Suomenlinna), buses, train and metro.
- The water in Finland is considered one of the cleanest in the world, even purer than bottled water. This means you can drink tap water safely, so just bring your own reusable bottle with you.
Day 1: Discovering Helsinki’s Highlights
EARLY MORNING:
Breakfast at Café Regatta
Start Your Day
Begin your day with breakfast at Café Regatta. Enjoy a hot chocolate and traditional sweet bread (Finnish bun ‘pulla’ or blueberry pie known as ‘mustikkapiirakka’) in this charming, lakeside café, which resembles a traditional Finnish summer cottage.
Also, I’m not going to lie—if you’re staying in a hotel, make sure to enjoy your breakfast there! They’ll likely offer Finnish delicacies, and later, you can savor a coffee and cake at a Fazer Café (a Finnish brand known for its guaranteed quality and taste).
Summer Activities
If you visit during the summer, you might consider renting a rowing boat, SUP boards, or kayaks to make the most of the beautiful lakeside location.
Important Notes
- The café is very small, but there are plenty of chairs and tables available outside.
- Be mindful of the birds and seagulls that might come around and steal your food!.
- There is a fireplace where you can grill your own sausage ‘makkara,’ but you need to purchase the sausage on-site.
- During the winter (at least the last time I visited), the café only serves food for consumption outside

Kids just love running, climbing, and sliding down the ‘volcanoes’.
Visit Oodi Helsinki Central Library
Nowadays, the number one attraction in Helsinki City is Oodi- the Helsinki Central Library! The design, amenities, and concept of this library are breaking the traditional library mold. You will be amazed by the 3D printers, sewing machines, music room, kitchen, and many more services this place offers.

Helsinki Cathedral or Helsingin tuomiokirkko in Finnish
Known as the White Church, the iconic Helsinki Cathedral, is located at Senaatintori (Senate Square) at the end of Aleksanterinkatu. The cathedral’s neoclassical architecture and striking white facade are a must-see.
In my opinion, you could skip going inside the church! The stairs are typically a good place for locals to enjoy the sun, eat some snacks, and just let the time pass by. If you visit during the winter after a heavy snowfall, be prepared to see people downhill skiing, snowboarding, and kids having fun in the snow as well.
Address: Senaatintori, Helsinki
Duration: 15 min- 1 hour
National Library of Finland
This might be the most beautiful library in Helsinki. You can make a quick visit to enjoy the views, or choose to skip it if you prefer. Nowadays, people are often more interested in Oodi’s concept, but the building and architecture of the National Library are still worth a stop!
Havis Amanda, Kauppatori & Market Square
Havis Amanda, a bronze fountain statue by sculptor Ville Vallgren, was unveiled in 1908 in Helsinki’s Esplanadi Park and recently remodeled. It symbolizes the rebirth of Helsinki and is a beloved cultural icon, particularly during Vappu (May Day) celebrations where students hang a hat on it. It’s also the gathering place for ice hockey victories and major national celebrations.
Explore Kauppatori (brown building) and Helsinki’s lively market square, where you can find local food, crafts, and souvenirs.
During the summer, it’s a great place to buy fresh berries, and enjoy traditional Finnish foods such as salmon soup, vendace (‘muikut’), and Finnish hash (‘pyttipannu’), which consists of diced potatoes, onions, and sausage all fried together in a pan. For tourists, there are also reindeer hot dogs and hamburgers! Additionally, the stands sell cute souvenirs. During autumn, winter, and spring, the area is quieter, but during the Christmas season, you can visit the Christmas Market (usually located in Senate Square), where you can find handmade gloves and wool socks to keep you warm among other stuff!
Be aware of the seagulls, they love stealing food!

Alternative Options After Walking the City
I know you might be thinking, “ENOUGH WALKING!” At this point, you might consider taking a break, go back to your hotel or go and take a closer look to Uspenski Cathedral (Orthodox Church). If you’re not interested in going inside, there’s still plenty to see and do around the Square Market Area.

Day 2: More Helsinki Exploration or Another Country?
More Helsinki Exploration
If you decide to stay in Helsinki for the second day, you might want to split the activities from Day 1 into two separate days. This will allow you to explore more at a relaxed pace. Consider visiting Suomenlinna or Porvoo, which are fantastic day trips from Helsinki. Note that a day trip to Turku will take up the whole day, so it’s better suited for those who have more time.
Day Trip to Tallinn
Alternatively, if you have the time and are up for an adventure, consider taking a day trip to Tallinn, Estonia! This is what I 100% recommend to do!
A cruise from Helsinki to Tallinn usually departs early in the morning and returns in the evening or late at night, making it a perfect day trip. The ferry takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. There are several ferry operators offering this route, including Tallink Silja, Viking Line, and Eckerö Line.
I don’t want to spoil how beautiful Old Town Tallinn is, but definitely consider going to Tallinn during your visit to Helsinki.
Why Tallinn?
As someone who has lived in Finland for over 10 years, I can tell you that Tallinn offers a charming experience that rivals any town or city in Finland. Its medieval old town, with vibrant and friendly culture, excellent dining options are sure to captivate you and, beautiful and modern places as well.
