If you’re looking for a family-friendly activity in Helsinki or simply want to experience the city from the sea, this historic sailing ship offers something truly special.
Why We Loved This Helsinki Archipelago Cruise
From the moment we stepped aboard, the atmosphere felt relaxed and welcoming. The crew was super friendly.
One of the highlights was helping the crew raise the sails. Watching the ship move quietly through the water, powered mostly by the wind, felt like stepping back in time. The recently renovated indoor saloon also deserves a mention—it has that classic wooden sailing ship charm and is the perfect place to warm up, ideal to grab a coffee and cinnamon bun (pulla) and go back to the main deck to enjoy the views.
Note that when the sails are up, the deck is not as sunny anymore, and in open sea the winds can be stronger. For this reason, the schooner offers cushions and blankets on deck so you can stay comfortable throughout the sail.
During the three-hour cruise, we also:
- Enjoyed spectacular views of the Helsinki Archipelago.
- Saw Helsinki’s impressive icebreakers up close.
- Got a close-up look at Finnish summer life—people kayaking, small sailboats and yachts in action, families enjoying sunny days on the islands, and large cruise ships in the harbor.
- Relaxed on deck (midship) while enjoying the summer sunshine.
- Learned more about traditional sailing from the incredibly friendly crew.
- Used binoculars, the spyglass, and even visited the helm.
- Watching sailors climb and jump the ropes up the masts—this was a huge hit with the boys. (The next day, they were still trying the sailor/pirate jumps at home and playground)
- It never felt rushed, making it one of our favorite slow-travel experiences in Helsinki. I dare to say that among the boat trips I’ve taken in Helsinki—apart from the cruise to Tallinn—this is the best for experiencing something truly unique.
A Family-Friendly Activity in Helsinki
Our boys absolutely loved this trip. And you know the saying… happy kids, happy mom.
They spent most of the cruise exploring the ship, climbing between the decks, using the binoculars and the spyglass, pretending to be little pirates and asking how long this sail is going to take…
If you’re visiting Helsinki with children or you are a solo traveler, this is a wonderful alternative to museums or city tours. There’s plenty of space to explore while still enjoying a relaxing experience together. Perhaps you can make new friends on board- this time I was spending time with my family, but I did talk shortly with the crew and I saw locals and international travellers enjoying the time together.
That said, I’m not going to pretend three hours isn’t a long time for every child. Depending on their age, they might get a little restless towards the end. Mine were a little bit desperate at the beginning because they wanted to see the sails already when we boarded the ship. Therefore, I’d definitely recommend bringing some extra snacks, a few candies, coloring books, small board games, or anything that helps keep them entertained. Trust me—it makes the experience even more enjoyable for everyone.
The Food on Board
One of the biggest surprises was the food.
We enjoyed freshly made traditional Finnish salmon soup—they actually start cooking it after you board, so it’s served fresh—and it was absolutely delicious.
But the real star?
The cinnamon bun.
Honestly, it was probably the best cinnamon bun we’ve had in Finland in years. I may or may not have eaten two… 
And I’d happily sail again just for another one!
As I mentioned before, you’re also welcome to bring your own snacks if you’d rather enjoy a little picnic while sailing through the archipelago.
What Happens if It Rains?
Before our trip ended, I asked the crew what would happen if the weather changes or its rainy day
Their answer was simple:
They still sail.
Instead of cancelling, every trip offers a completely different experience. On sunny days you’ll enjoy calm waters and blue skies, while rainy or windier weather gives you a much more authentic sailing adventure.
Their recommendation is simply to dress appropriately for the weather. After all… sailors don’t stop sailing because of a little rain or wind!
(Of course, I imagine sailings would be cancelled if the weather became unsafe for passengers.)

Is Schooner Kathrina Wheelchair Accessible?
Due to the historic design of the vessel, it is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Boarding and movement on board require stairs and uneven surfaces, so the experience is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with significant mobility limitations..
