Looking for a Lapland Alternative? Discover the Magic of the Bothnian Coastal Route
“I’m planning a trip to Lapland next year, but I don’t know where to start. Do you recommend Rovaniemi, Levi, or Saariselkä? I’m looking for less commercialized places in Lapland but still want to experience the Christmas spirit.”
When most travelers think of winter in Finland or Sweden, Lapland usually steals the show. But what if you’re craving a less commercialized alternative, while still experiencing the magic of Christmas and the stunning Nordic landscapes? The Bothnian Coastal Route (BCR) might be what you are looking for—a hidden gem that’s a perfect alternative for an authentic, less-crowded “winter” and all year round getaway.
The Bothnian Coastal Route stretches across 13 charming cities along the coasts of Finland and Sweden. It offers an unbeatable blend of outdoor activities not only exclusive for winter, rich cultural heritage, skies full of colors during the night with northern lights and the colorful stratospheric clouds during the day time and awe-inspiring landscapes—all with fewer crowds than traditional Lapland destinations. And the best part? The BCR is an unforgettable destination year-round.
Why the Bothnian Coastal Route is the Perfect Lapland Alternative
A true conversation I had with a German Traveller on the bus this year from Rovaniemi to Kemi was “I’m on my way to Oulu because the car rental prices were insane, and forget about the prices. There were no cars available in Rovaniemi. So we sleep tonight in Oulu and then we head to Saariselkä”
With Finnish Lapland becoming increasingly crowded, it can be hard to find available accommodation, rental cars and activities. The Bothnian Coastal Route provides a perfect alternative, combining the best of Lapland’s charm without the hassle of overcrowding.

Icebreaker Adventures in Kemi and Kalix
When you think of Arctic adventure, nothing beats the thrill of icebreaking! In Kemi, Finland, hop aboard the iconic Sampo Icebreaker or the newer Arktiks Icebreaker to slice through the thick sea ice. One of the most unforgettable moments? Floating in the icy waters while wearing a survival suit—an experience that feels straight out of an adventure movie.
For a truly magical stay, spend a night in a Seaside Glass Villa in Kemi, where you can relax in a cozy, glass-walled cabin with breathtaking views of the frozen sea and northern lights dancing above. While in Kemi, visit the SnowExperience365 room, an incredible indoor winter wonderland with ice sculptures, an ice slide, and even an ice bar—open 365 days a year at a crisp -5°C!
In Kalix, Sweden, you can embark on a similar adventure aboard the Polar Explorer Icebreaker—an unforgettable chance to feel the raw power of these massive vessels and witness the stunning frozen seascapes.
No worries about getting there—transportation from the most popular cities is arranged for the icebreakers!

Luleå: Where History Meets Winter Fun
Luleå has completely stolen my heart this winter, and I can’t wait to visit during the summer! It’s the perfect mix of history, charm, and winter adventure—definitely a must-stop on the Bothnian Coastal Route. Whether you’re looking for a cozy stay in the heart of downtown, like Quality Hotel with its spacious family rooms and delicious breakfast, or something a little more unique, there are some amazing options. You can sleep inside a crystal-clear bubble under the Arctic sky at Ice & Light Village or head out to Base Camp for a real back-to-nature experience. No matter where you stay or how you explore, Luleå is pure magic and charming city!!
Gammelstad Church Town: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Just outside Luleå, you’ll find Gammelstad Church Town, a picturesque UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through its over 400 red wooden cottages, all surrounding a 15th-century stone church. This historical village offers a glimpse into life centuries ago when these cottages were overnight lodgings for churchgoers.
Ice Roads in Luleå Archipelago
In winter, the Luleå Archipelago becomes a true winter wonderland. Over 30 kilometers of ice roads are opened, allowing visitors to walk, skate, cycle, or even drive across the frozen sea. It’s a thrilling experience that’s like no other, surrounded by snow-covered islands and glistening ice.

Tornio & Haparanda: Step into Two Countries and Two Time Zones
Tornio (Finland) and Haparanda (Sweden) are twin towns located on the border. The best part? They’re in different time zones, meaning you can walk from one country to the other and literally step into the past or future. Want to celebrate New Year’s Eve twice? No problem! You can ring in the new year in Finland and then hop over to Sweden an hour later.
For an extra touch of fun, check out the local attractions like Grand Hotel Mustaparta, a design gem with a cozy atmosphere, and Stadd Hotel, which has a unique, modern style that blends perfectly with the surroundings.
