I’ve been visiting Santa Claus Village every year for more than 10 years, and it never fails to surprise me. With new activities each year and the evolving experience with my boys, every visit is unique. Let me share my ultimate 1-day itinerary to help you experience the magic of this Finnish wonderland.
Best Time to Visit Santa Claus Village
Most activities are available year-round, but keep in mind that Rovaniemi’s high season is winter-spring, and it starts getting popular in autumn. This means summer is very quiet, with most stores at Santa Claus Village closed, so be sure to double-check the timetables for the remaining activities. Let me share my ultimate 1-day itinerary to help you experience the magic of this Finnish wonderland.
1-day itinerary activities
Ideal Itinerary for Families, Solo Travelers, and Couples
- EARLY BREAKFAST: Wake up to have early breakfast! Let’s face it, waking up early in the morning while on vacation has positive sides!
- CROSS THE ARCTIC CIRCLE: Taking advantage of the early wake-up, I’d RUN to cross the Arctic Circle many times and take thousands of pictures while most people are still sleeping.
- MEET SANTA CLAUS AT SANTA CLAUS OFFICE: Once again, the earlier, the better! Chances are you won’t have to wait in line!
- TAKE A REINDEER RIDE AT SANTA CLAUS REINDEER: a short reindeer ride is enough! and guess what? You will cross the arctic circle this time on a sled!
During Summer you can visit the reindeer and feed them! Once the temperature starts dropping in Autumn, and before the 1st snow comes, you can experience reindeer on wheels!
- HUSKY RIDE AT HUSKY PARK: This is by far my favorite place! They are responsible tourism tour operators with large kennels for the dogs and a HUSKY HUG AREA! The staff is super friendly!
During Summer you can visit husky farms, nowadays some of the farms offer walks in the forest with them! And the same applies here, once the temperature starts dropping in Autumn, and before the 1st snow comes, you can experience reindeer on wheels!
Note during raining and very moisture days your tours might be cancelled!
Be sure to book the husky experience in advance as it’s likely to be SOLD OUT!
- EAT AT SANTA SALMON’S PLACE Enjoy traditional smoked salmon in a traditional cottage and watch as they prepare it in front of your eyes. (Takes about 20 minutes to get ready)
- ENJOY EXPLORING THE SHOPS: Thank yourself for waking up early because at this time the village will be full of tourists.
- Here you can visit the Post Office and send a traditional postcard to your beloved ones from the Arctic Circle.
- You can also get a certificate for having crossed the Arctic Circle (they don’t stamp passports anymore).Thank yourself for waking up early because at this time the village will be full of tourists.
- If you are a Christmas person (Available only during the highseason): You can VISIT MRS. SANTA CLAUS’ CHRISTMAS COTTAGE (I’ve never been there) and enjoy a warm coffee or hot chocolate with gingerbread.
- If you want to VISIT ROVANIEMI CITY FOR DINNER: I 100% recommend:
- Hanki Restaurant and order the fried tofu. The cabbage salad that comes with it is delicious!
- Saigon Noodle Bar and the traditional Tofu Pho Soup (Be aware that the broth is NOT vegetarian)
- Time to rest and wait for the solar activity to HUNT NORTHERN LIGHTS! Remember, to see the Northern Lights, you need solar activity, dark skies (from mid-August to mid-April), clear skies (no clouds), and precise timing and location. This is why aurora hunters can make all the difference!
If you decide to go on a Northern Lights tour, check that the tours don’t have fixed times, like 7-10 pm, as the activity might start at 10:05, 11 pm, or even 1 am. Look for tours that offer a money-back guarantee if you don’t see the lights (you only pay for gasoline). Bonus points if the tour includes professional photos and videos, and consider guides who showcase their services with a high percentage of successful nights.
- ENJOY EXPLORING THE SHOPS: Thank yourself for waking up early because at this time the village will be full of tourists.
Additional Notes:
- This itinerary is definitely doable in one day in Autumn and Summer time, but during the winter, it’s harder as it’s the high season (more people means more queuing and unexpected delays). It also requires a lot of energy to be outside despite the weather!
- One more thing, and probably the most important that NO ONE TALKS ABOUT: the limited daylight during winter in Rovaniemi, with only a few hours of light each day, can be challenging. And remember, sunny days are usually the coldest!
- If you’re hoping to see the Northern Lights, it’s recommended to stay in Lapland for at least 3 to 4 nights. This duration increases your chances of catching a clear night with active auroras.
